UPDATE: CNBC has said that the network will not be hiring Lou Dobbs.

"We are not in talks or negotiating with Lou Dobbs. He is not going to work for CNBC," a network spokesman told the New York Times, though he did not deny the report that talks had occurred in recent weeks.

Original Post: Since Lou Dobbs left CNN, most of the conversation about his next move has centered on potential political ambitions. But the New York Times' Brian Stelter reports that Dobbs has held talks with CNBC, a signal that Dobbs has not ruled out a return to TV news:

Stelter reports that Dobbs "has held talks" with CNBC and "will likely make a decision about his post-CNN career this month." He floats the idea of Dobbs hosting a primetime program on CNBC and serving as a commentator for the network.

Dobbs joined CNN at its founding in 1980 as chief economics correspondent, and founded CNN's financial news network, CNN fn, in the 1990s.

Before he left CNN, Dobbs met with Fox News chief Roger Ailes, prompting speculation that he might be joining CNBC's upstart competitor, the Fox Business Network.
