Matt Lauer asked Cuyahoga County Sheriff Frank Bova for an interview with Ariel Castro and was turned away, according to a local reporter who witnessed the situation.
Scott Taylor, an investigative reporter for 19 Action News in Cleveland, tweeted Friday:
Taylor added that Bova said about the request, "I won't allow it" and "An Ariel Castro interview from jail isn't going to happen in Cleveland."
On Thursday, Castro received a life sentence without parole plus 1,000 years in prison for kidnapping three women and keeping them and raping them in his home for a decade. The women were found alive in May, after one of them escaped and called the police.
NBC News' Kate Snow reported on Castro's sentencing for "Today" on Friday, and Castro's son Anthony condemned his father in an interview on the morning show.
