Following the Congress Party's success in India's elections this year, Cabinet member Meira Kumar has been offered the job of Speaker of Parliament. Her ascension to the position is expected to go unopposed and will make her the first woman Speaker, according to the BBC:

Meira Kumar, 64, filed her nomination papers on Tuesday and is expected to be elected unopposed on Wednesday.

Ms Kumar belongs to the low-caste Dalit - formerly untouchable - community. Her nomination has been welcomed by members of political parties across the house.
