Indian farmers, facing a severe drought this summer, are using an ancient ritual to bring rain to their fields: asking their unmarried daughters to plow the arid fields naked. According to Reuters, the naked girls are seen singing hymns and plowing the fields to "embarrass the weather gods." Although their actions may seem inappropriate and inhumane to other countries, the ritual is commonplace in India and believed to be successful, according to an Indian village council official.
"This is the most trusted social custom in the area and the villagers have vowed to continue this practice until it rains very heavily.
India is experiencing its worst start to the monsoon rains in eight decades.
