Here Is Nelson Mandela's First TV Interview Ever

In 1961, Nelson Mandela was underground, in hiding from the South African apartheid government. But he gave an interview to a British reporter, ITN's Brian Widlake. He was 42 years old. It was his first-ever television interview. Widlake asked him questions like, "Do you see Africans being able to develop in this country without Europeans being pushed out?" and "Are there many educated Africans inside South Africa?"

As the world mourns Mandela, let's remember how much of it was introduced to him — and of the kinds of questions he was subjected to.
