WASHINGTON -- On Saturday, the tenants of the Norwood Cooperative in Logan Circle will be celebrating. After six years of organizing, and a $9.7 million loan from the D.C. government, Norwood's tenants have purchased the 84-unit building and turned it into an affordable-housing cooperative.
Saturday's celebration will include making a Mayan sawdust carpet -- a Guatemalan carpet made of colored sawdust -- screening the trailer of a documentary being made about the Norwood's organizing process, music by two bands affiliated with the building and a children's play about the Norwood (the play is called "Condozilla," said Farah Fosse, affordable housing program director for the Latino Economic Development Corporation, who has been working with the tenants). Food will be provided by a local taqueria.
Attendees will include D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown (D), Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), Office of the Tenant Advocate Director Johanna Shreve, and the board and members of the new Norwood 1417 N St. NW Cooperative.
Attendees can also include you -- the event is free and open to members of the public who want to learn more about cooperative housing, Mayan sawdust carpets and taquerias.
The celebration starts at 12:30 p.m. with a ribbon cutting at the Norwood (1417 N St. NW) before moving to the National City Christian Church (5 Thomas Circle NW) from 1:30 p.m.-7 p.m. Find the full schedule here.
