Evans represented the 17th District for 12 terms, but retired in 2006 due to an ongoing battle with Parkinson's Disease. He now resides in an assisted living center in Silvis, Illinois. Obama has repeatedly said how much he admires his former congressional colleague and has even credited his 2004 Senate victory to Evans' early support.
