Pit Bull Rescued From High-Kill Shelter Really Loves Snuggling, Especially With His Adoptive Dad

Pit Bull Rescued From High-Kill Shelter Really Loves Snuggling

Beware the pit bull: he might sit on your lap and refuse to get up.

Show up at one Wisconsin home, and there is a good chance that Kawi the doggie will make himself comfortable somewhere on your person.

"If you stop to sit, he is going to stop and sit on you," says Meaghan Graves, Kawi's adoptive mom. "He will snuggle with anyone who is willing to let him on their lap."

The lap in question, more often than not, belongs to Graves' husband, Joel, who obviously doesn't mind Kawi's rather relentless affection.

Photo: Meaghan Graves

Kawi came into the couple's lives about a year ago, after losing a beloved dog to an autoimmune disease.

Desperately lonely without a canine companion, the pair began their search for a furry someone to help fill that void.

They were especially interested in adopting a pit, since "we knew we could change some peoples' opinions by being responsible pet owners, and having a vicious pit bull that was only capable of licking and snuggling you to death," says Graves.

Photo: Meaghan Graves

Kawi was perfect for that role.

As a puppy, he'd been taken in by a rescue group, out of a high-kill shelter in the south. Kawi was still itty bitty when his then-foster mom brought him by the Graves' for a meet-and-greet, to see if he'd be a good match.

On that visit, Kawi sniffed every room, and executed some test nibbles on a few toys.

Then he "made himself comfortable on Joel’s lap," says Graves. "I think Kawi knew he was the one for us before we even knew it."

Photo: Meaghan Graves

Graves herself also enjoys some dog-on-lap time. As do Kawi's human grandparents, along with all the friendly folks Kawi encounters out in the world.

"He will cuddle with pretty much anyone who will cuddle with him," says Graves."For anyone who may run into us and Kawi, feel free to come say 'hi.' He loves the attention, and we love to educate on how great of a dog he is."

Photo: Meaghan Graves

Joel, who is already convinced that Kawi is a good boy, continues to be the dog's usual perch -- except that sometimes the two take to spooning instead, or finagling into an even more pretzel-like position.

"They're always snuggling," Graves says, adding that she wouldn't have minded if Kawi was less demonstrative. But he is, and -- you'll find this obvious, from the photos -- she is completely thrilled about how things have turned out.

"Watching his sweet little eyes fade to sleep, and giving him unlimited kisses as Joel or I drift into dreamland, is the most satisfying feeling ever, knowing that this little pup is loved," she says. "Kawi doesn’t have a miraculous rescue story like you hear on the news. But for us, he still had a journey, and he is now ours, and that is all that matters."

These Amazing Animals Need Homes
Dudley, Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter(01 of35)
Open Image Modal
Dudley is a 1.5-year-old American bulldog mix who has the heart and energy of a puppy. He approaches every moment of life with joy and enthusiasm. He is beyond affectionate and will nudge up against his handler just for extra love and snuggles. Dudley needs some training and some guidance (come on, what 1-year old doesn’t?), but has an amazing personality, is completely lovable, and would be your best friend for life. In the time he has been at the shelter he has already made huge steps in his training. Dudley is quite the smartypants and is a fast learner! He loves training just as much as he loves playing. Due to Dudley’s high energy he needs to be in a home with no children, but is social and playful with other dogs! Dudley is pure love and would be your best bud for life! If you would like to know more, please contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or check out their website. They are located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh, NY 11793. Ranger, Humane Society Silicon Valley(02 of35)
Open Image Modal
Ranger might be the friendliest cat you will ever meet in your life. When you walk by his room he taps the glass with a paw to try and get you to come in. He also has this incredibly endearing habit of drooling when he purrs, hence the mouth wiping. A talker, he'd love to hang out on your lap and hear about your day. Ranger is FIV positive which really isn't a huge deal, he just needs to be indoor only and should only be with other FIV positive kitties. He's at Humane Society Silicon Valley's Milpitas Animal Community Center. (credit:Humane Society Silicon Valley)
Paprika, Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter(03 of35)
Open Image Modal
Paprika is the longest resident at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. She has been there for over two years and four months. This sweet and petite 4.5-year-old beauty has been waiting for her chance for a forever home, but keeps getting passed over. Paprika is definitely losing hope, and is really stressed out in the kennels, which makes it even more urgent to get her out of the shelter. Paprika is a volunteer favorite and is super affectionate. She knows basic commands (including sit, paw, kiss and stay) and is eager to learn more! Paprika walks well on leash, seems house trained and needs her angel to come find her. She can be picky about which dogs she likes, but can live in a home with another dog. Paprika has her own Facebook page. If you would like to know more, please contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or check out their website. They are located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh, NY 11793. Gertie, Terre Haute Humane Society(04 of35)
Open Image Modal
Gertie was dumped at the shelter after hours and was found by staff when they came to work. She has been a joy but because she tends to be a little on the shy quiet side families continue to pass her by. She is about 5 years old, good with dogs and cats, is affectionate and loving, knows some basic commands, is housebroken and up to date on vaccines. She just needs the right family to take her home!Find out more from the Terre Haute Humane Society in Indiana. (credit:Terre Haute Humane Society)
Curly, Humane Society Silicon Valley(05 of35)
Open Image Modal
Curly is a 3-month-old Syrian hamster and he stands in for the tidal wave of hammies and other pocket pets the shelter has surrendered to it, usually due to unwanted litters. As spokes-hamster, Curly would like to let everyone know that the shelter has hamsters, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits available for adoption. Many adopters aren't aware that shelters have these little guys and often turn to a pet store before looking at their local shelter. Not only are shelters a great source for pocket pets, but counselors are also adept at providing information and resources for small mammal adopters. Pocket pets aren't only for kids. They make great pets for busy professionals who enjoy having someone to come home to. Curly and his other small buddies are housed at Humane Society Silicon Valley's Petco West San Jose and Petco Sunnyvale Neighborhood Adoption Centers. (credit:Humane Society Silicon Valley)
Cowboy, Kansas City Pet Project(06 of35)
Open Image Modal
This is Cowboy, and he is so sweet that shelter staff have fallen hard for him. His looks a little rough around the edges, but KC Pet Project is getting this guy into tip-top shape, including helping him with a few skin issues and dental surgery to remove most of his teeth due to periodontal disease. Cowboy gets along well with other cats but humans are his favorite. He loves being petted on the head, adores being held and loves giving kisses. Jack, Austin Animal Center(07 of35)
Open Image Modal
Jack is a gentle giant, a big, sweet 100 pound Plott hound/Rhodesian ridgeback mix. Lots of things scare him at first -- like getting in a car to go on an outing -- and the barking and noise from the other dogs scares him a little too. But he’s calm and affectionate with people, is amazingly easy to walk on the leash and gets along fine with other well-behaved dogs. He loves to sit between your knees and get petted and give you kisses. He loves a long, slow walk, too, but he’s not sure about going in the water. He really loves treats, and that makes him easy to train. A quiet, easy-going, affectionate home would suit Jack best. And after over 250 days at the shelter, he deserves one.Find out more from the Austin Animal Center, in Texas. (credit:Austin Animal Center)
Dan, Humane Society Calvert County(08 of35)

Dan came from a situation that was not the best. When he arrived, he was scarred up and super thin. In no time, he left his past behind -- which includes his slim figure. Dan knows that he's living the good life at the Humane Society of Calvert County. He gets to go on daily walks with volunteers, he takes occasional trips to the beach , he gets plenty of love as he is a staff favorite and we can't help but to give him a huge amount of attention (and toys, which he loves keeping with him outside in the play yard). As happy as Dan is at the Humane Society of Calvert County, he would be even happier in a forever home.Find out more from Humane Society Calvert County, in Maryland. Brownie absolutely loves to be with people. If given the chance she will calmly follow you around and help in the yard or keep the couch warm with you while you watch a show. She's had an eye removed for medical reasons, but does fine with children and other animals, and is just a happy mellow girl. Brownie is a bit into her golden years and doesn't have a ton of energy but would gladly go for a walk to check the mail. Find out more from Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, in California. Murdock, Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter(11 of35)
Open Image Modal
Murdock arrived at the shelter in July 2014, but was unable to been seen by the public nor was he available for adoption until now. The reason is that he was being held as evidence in a cruelty case against his former owner who was arrested for dog fighting. Finally, the former owner pleaded guilty and Murdock was freed. Now, Murdock waits for the loving home that he so desperately needs! Murdock is 6.5 years old, and as you can see from his face, he bears the scars inflicted by his owner's despicable actions. Despite his terrible past, Murdock loves people and he just follows his handler around with a low, wagging tail. He has zero handling issues and walks excellent on leash. This boy, who has clearly been through hell and back, holds no grudges to people; he is a love, a mush, a kisser, a cuddler and everything you’d expect from your furry best friend. Even though Murdock needs a solo dog household, he can very happily and easily pass a dog on the street without so much as a glance. If there ever was a dog deserving of a second chance and a better life, Murdock is definitively that dog! Murdock even has his own Facebook page.If you would like to know more, please contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or check out their website. Kumar is 13 years old and has been in the system for 10 months. He was confiscated from a meth lab after child protective services called the SPCA of Southwest Michigan for assistance. Kumar, and a dozen cats, were removed. He suffered from severe flea infestation and was emaciated. Kumar will never grow back the hair on his body. (SPCA of Southwest Michigan improvised in winter with sweatshirts and sweaters.) He deserves a quiet place to live out his days. Kumar likes other animals but shows poorly in a cage and appears cage aggressive. He is a lover and he is the kennel staffs' favorite dog.Find out more from SPCA of Southwest Michigan. Say hello to Squiddy, an adorable 4-year-old hound mix. Alejandro, Humane Society Silicon Valley(16 of35)
Open Image Modal
Alejandro is essentially a perfect dog. This 7-year-old Chihuahua is housebroken, crate trained, loves car rides and goes to work every day with his foster parent. Yes, he's a tan Chihuahua and yes, he looks older than he is but being an enlightened society surely we can overlook this. Due to dental issues, he had some teeth removed, which doesn't affect his ability to eat but does give him a certain rakish charm. A clown with people, he loves everyone he meets and hasn't met a lap he doesn't want to park his four-pound self on. He occasionally likes to heckle other dogs when on leash but has been working on it with a trainer. If you'd like to meet Alejandro, call Humane Society Silicon Valley's foster department at 408-262-2133 ext 183. (credit:Humane Society Silicon Valley)

Athens, Washington Animal Rescue League(20 of35)
Open Image Modal
Athens is a handsome, cheeky, 4-year-old male cat who came to the Washington Animal Rescue League from an overcrowded partner shelter. He's an incredibly sweet and friendly guy who just happens to be FIV positive. Although his immune system is less robust than that of other cats, with an attentive human companion and responsible medical care, Athens should live a long and happy life. Because FIV can be transmitted to other felines, he shouldn't live with other cats unless they, too, are FIV positive. Being a laid-back, dog-friendly kind of guy, he could, however, share a home with a canine companion. If you're looking for an affectionate, chatty cat who loves being near people, please consider adopting Athens.Find out more from the Washington Animal Rescue League, in Washington, D.C. Roscoe, Austin Animal Center(21 of35)
Open Image Modal
It’s a mystery why Roscoe is now the longest-stay dog at Austin Animal Center. He’s a happy, playful guy who loves to cannonball into the water when he gets taken to the hike and bike trail along Lady Bird Lake. Roscoe’s been through a lot, so he seems stand-offish at first, but he becomes super affectionate as soon as you give him any attention. He came to the shelter underweight and seemed to have trouble walking because his paws were tender. But shelter staff and volunteers nursed him back to health and discovered how affectionate and trainable he is. He’d be great with an active family that loves the outdoors. His only problem is that he’s been at the shelter too long, and it’s beginning to wear on him, so he needs to find his forever home as soon as possible.Find out more from the Austin Animal Center in Texas, (credit:Austin Animal Center)

Otto, Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter(23 of35)

When Otto first arrived at the shelter he was underweight, covered in a severe case of mange and petrified of everyone and everything around him. We don’t know where Otto was before he arrived at the shelter, but it seems it was not a kind place. It took several months, but over time and with lots of TLC, Otto began recuperating both physically and mentally. His hair grew back -- although he will always have a few bald spots -- he gained some weight and he began trusting people. Otto has made a full turn around and has grown into a staff and volunteer favorite due to his sweet disposition and easygoing personality. Otto is 2.5 years old and ready to become part of a family. He walks well on a leash, is great with other dogs, knows several commands and appears to be house trained. Otto has been saved from such neglect, now all he needs is a forever home! Damon, Kansas City Pet Project(25 of35)
Open Image Modal
Damon came to Kansas City Pet Project with some serious injuries and a bit of a head tilt. Because of his injuries, he spent some time in a foster home. His foster mother reports that he is a very sweet kitty who enjoys a head, chest or cheek rub and will reward you with a low purr. He enjoys being around people, but will occasionally take some alone time. He is convinced that it is his mission in life to ensure that no bowl of wet food is left uncleaned. Damon is an FIV cat which means he should only go to a home with no other cats or other cats with FIV. With good care, FIV cats can live long heathy lives. Damon has been through some tough times and dealt with them very well. He needs a forever home where his spirit that got him through those times will be appreciated. Rose is one of those dogs that breaks your heart. Rose came to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter as a stray, found eating food out of a garbage bag on the side of the road. Over time staff and volunteers showed her the love that she desperately needed; taking her out for walks, getting her used to people and playing with her. Slowly but surely, Rose has come around. She enjoys being near people, loves to sit in the sun, walks well on leash, knows a few basic commands and is house trained. Rose is social with other dogs, but doesn't like pushy behavior.
