Polar Seltzer Unveils Holiday Flavors: Eggnog, Candy Cane, Pumpkin Spice & More

Unusual Holiday Seltzer Flavors: Eggnog, Candy Cane And More
|

We're down with the seasonal offerings of various food companies. Pumpkin lattes? Mint hot chocolate? Yes, please. But we were a bit thrown for a loop by Polar Seltzer's newest holiday limited edition flavors: Eggnog, Candy Cane, Pumpkin Spice and Granny Smith Apple. Like the classic seltzer, these varieties are calorie- and sugar-free. But unlike the original, the added taste comes from natural flavors, aka chemical compounds that mimic the taste of actual foodstuff. For that reason, a lot of them tasted a bit medicinal, but we would certainly consider some of them for cocktail ingredients. In all the flavors, the aromas were a lot stronger than the actual taste, even overpowering at times.

The 1-liter seltzers retail for $0.99 until the end of December. Check out the slideshow below for the results of our taste test.

Candy cane was actually quite good with nice pepperminty and mint tea notes. It was not as sweet as one may assume, and could work in a holiday cocktail.Said one editor, "Though the concept of drinking something so similar to mouthwash is disconcerting, it was mild enough to be somewhat pleasant. A boon for those with post-lunch breath." (credit:Joseph Erdos)

We were decidedly mixed on the Eggnog. While some found the smell and taste to be overly medicinal, others found it to be similar to a seltzer version of cream soda. (credit:Joseph Erdos)

Sadly, Pumpkin Spice reminded several of us of tasting like a product from the Yankee Candle Company. (credit:Joseph Erdos)
Granny Smith Apple(04 of04)

This flavor tasted the most natural of the bunch. It was nice and crisp, and actually pleasant to drink on its own. The aroma was spot-on. (credit:Joseph Erdos)
