Richard Rhodes is best known as the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb, Dark Sun, and Arsenals of Folly: The Making of the Nuclear Arms Race. But he's also a novelist and now a playwright; his new play, Reykjavik, is a true-to-life dramatization of the historic summit between Reagan and Gorbachev--and it was dramatic!--in which they came very close to signing a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. The deal was spoiled by none other than Richard Perle, whom Rhodes characterizes as Iago in his script. (The play is dedicated to Paul Newman, who suggested to Rhodes that he write it.)
A reading of Reykjavik, with Rhodes in attendance, is being staged by Umbrella Hat Productions on Tuesday night in Santa Fe, NM.
