It's a girl!
The San Francisco zoo welcomed a rare Sumatran tiger cub last month, and this weekend, she officially debuted to the public.
The precious five-week-old cat is in excellent health, according to zoo officials, and thriving under the close care of her mother, Leanne.
"Since the exam, we've been able to conduct brief socialization sessions with the cub to get her used to her keepers," said Corinne MacDonald, Curator of Carnivores and Primates at the San Francisco Zoo, in a statement. "As we learned with Leanne's last litter, she is an extremely attentive mother and allows us in the same space as the cub as long as she is able to watch from an adjoining enclosure."
The baby girl will be named during ZooFest, the organization's annual fundraiser, which takes place May 11. Tickets to the event start at $500, and the naming rights will be sold to the highest bidder.
For now, visitors to the zoo can meet the cub during limited viewing hours, on weekends from 1-3 p.m.
Sumatran tigers, native to an island off the Malaysian Peninsula, are critically endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction. Experts estimate their population to be less than 400 throughout the world.
