Fresh from his summer vacation, Stephen Colbert's razor-sharp satire was back in full force Tuesday night with a grim-but-brilliant takedown of the escalating tensions in Syria and America's aparent blank-stare attitude toward the horrors of Chicago gun violence.

After briefly mocking the post-VMA Miley Cyrus media circus, Colbert turned to the Middle East conflict, zeroing in on the U.S.'s stepped-up response to the Syrian government only after it allegedly used weaponized nerve gas on civilians.

"Dictator Bashar al-Assad is killing his own people with chemical weapons. Before he was just killing them with bullets," Colbert said (embedded above, riff starts around 3:35). "If America cared about shooting people, we'd be invading Chicago."
