Two Cornell students died in unrelated incidents in the gorges near the university's campus on Saturday. One student, Nathaniel Rand, was a rising senior at the college. The other student was visiting from abroad.

The Cornell Daily Sun has more:

In one incident, Rand and a group of Cornell students were swimming in the gorge around 4 p.m. when Rand became trapped underneath the water near Ithaca Falls, according to Blaine Friedlander, assistant director of Cornell press relations.

Members of the Ithaca Fire Department tried to rescue Rand but could not find him

.

The other student apparently lost his footing while hiking and fell into a gorge three hours earlier. His name had not yet been released, as his family has not been notified.
