What motivates people to run? What is their goal? Money, prestige ... peace of mind?
If it's peace of mind you're after, racing solo is the only option. Then your only competitor is you, and you're merely competing to improve yourself daily.
Perhaps you'll get high marks for being a more daring risk-taker. You might also become more compassionate and expressive.
The quest for solo runners can be pared down to this one question: Am I a more fit human being today?
Don't be swayed by others if they try to goad you into their race.
As Alysia Harris puts it: "The moment you feel you have to prove your worth to someone is the moment to absolutely and utterly walk away."
