The ultimate Miami police pursuit apparently happened early Thursday morning, and we slept right through it.

Authorities say three men are in custody after a helicopter-involved boat chase filled with gunfire sped through Southwest Dade canals for nearly an hour.

The chase began around 1:20 a.m. near 74th Avenue and SW 8th Street when an off-duty police officer in his home heard gunfire. He spotted three white males in a small boat in the canal, who fled when police responded to the scene.

Miami-Dade Det. Aida Fina-Milian said a helicopter responded to assist in the pursuit as police cruisers chased the boat from land. The men on the boat the fired at officers who had taken tactical positions on the bridges; several officers returned fire, possibly grazing one of the boaters.

The suspects finally surrendered about an hour later near SW 112th Avenue and 69th Street in the Snapper Creeek Canal and were taken into custody.

Fina-Milian said a gun was recovered at the scene.

This is a developing story.
