Richard Bombain appeared before a Gary City Court judge on Monday to explain while he was driving without a license, and he apparently thought he had a pretty good excuse.

"I'm blind," Bombain told Judge Pro Tem Itsia Rivera, according to the Post-Tribune of northwest Indiana.

Judge Rivera's response might not have been what he was hoping to hear. "How many people are you trying to kill?" she reportedly said back.

Bombain apparently apologized to the judge, according to ABC, but she said she didn't want an apology -- she wanted him off the road.

In Indiana, driving without a license is a Class C misdemeanor, the lowest classification of crime in that state. The maximum sentence for such an offense is a 60-day prison term, but it's usually resolved by a fine of not more than $500.

Bombain's trial is set for September 26.
