Taylor Swift recently declared war on Spotify and pulled her catalog from the streaming service. The company's CEO, Daniel Ek, responded with a claim that his company has paid artists more than $2 billion.
The fundamental question is one of fairness. Are artists being rightfully compensated for their contributions? And what about future artists? Will sufficient incentives exist for them to make music?
To this end, I recently sat down with Mark Kelly, a member of The Featured Artists Coalition. He's also served as keyboardist of the English band Marillion for more than three decades. Few musicians have his perspective on the business of music.
