SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Police say an Oregon college student visiting his family in San Francisco was shot and killed a block from his family's home after a gunman approached him and asked if he was a member of a gang.
Nineteen-year-old Jacob Valdiviezo was shot after the gunman got out of a car, walked up to Valdiviezo and a friend as they walked to the home in the city's Mission District around 3 a.m. Saturday.
Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman, described Valdiviezo as a "very good kid" with no gang affiliations.
Family members say Valdiviezo was an athlete who graduated with honors from San Francisco's Archbishop Riordan High School, before going to Lewis and Clark University in Oregon.
He was a sophomore at the university, where he was a wide receiver on the football team.
Homicide investigators are interviewing neighbors as they try to identify a suspect.
