You probably already knew that New York's area airports were some of the worst in the country.

And you also probably already knew that these same airports rank first, second, and third worst in on-time arrivals for major American airports.

But did you know that New York is home to 41 of the country's 50 most-delayed flights?

According to a new Bloomberg News report, flights that started or ended at Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK airports make up more than 80% of all delays. In total, "industrywide delays may have cost U.S. carriers as much as $17 billion in 2009, including spending on wasted fuel and crew pay."

Officials hope that upgrades to JFK's main runway will help ease congestion, but in the months in which it will be closed the problem will only be exacerbated. Just in time for summer!
