Jack Shafer in Slate does the complete deconstruction of the crack-scare reborn as meth-scare story. My favorite part: how long it took anyone to notice that the long-predicted inundation of crack babies -- who should by now be in college -- never materialized. On the other hand, maybe that's who's anchoring on CNN these days. On the other other hand, nobody ever picked up on The Crack Babies as the ideal piss-the-grownups-off name for a band. Maybe with the new scare, there's a chance for the Meth Babies to become indie faves.

UPDATE: I was wrong. Of course I should have known better. Honest, officer.
