The opening reception of the 20th anniversary of Photo L.A. The programming for the fair, which runs through Monday, January 17th, includes a screening of David Wojnarowicz's Smithsonian-censored video, A Fire in My Belly. In conjunction with the fair, Artbook/D.A.P. will host panel discussions, lectures, and signings with Lyle Ashton Harris, Ron Jude, Uta Barth, Michael Light, Andrew Moore, David Taylor, and more.

Panel Discussion: Zócalo at the Fowler: How Does Street Art Humanize Cities?

Street artists remain the subject of controversy, forcing cities to consider what art is acceptable, who should be allowed to create it, and where. As the show of Larry Yust's photographs of street art in Los Angeles, Berlin, and Paris closes January 16th, Fowler Museum curator Patrick Polk, Aaron Rose, street artist Retna, and artist and curator Man One discuss how street art humanizes cities. Moderated by Jori Finkel, arts writer, Los Angeles Times. RSVP required.

Dispatches and Directions: On Artist-Run Organizations in Los Angeles

ART2102 presents the launch event and public symposium for Dispatches and Directions: On Artist-Run Organizations in Los Angeles. This project is a compendium of works, thoughts, essays and a directory of artist-run and nonprofit projects in Los Angeles. Participants will include: Thomas Lawson, Piero Golia, Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer, Lauri Firstenberg, Renaud Proch, Yunhee Min, Eve Fowler, Davida Nemeroff, Dorit Cypis, Giles Miller, Wu Tsang,and Jennifer Doyle.

My Barbarian: Death Panel Discussion

My Barbarian is Los Angeles-based performance collective founded in 2000 by Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon and Alexandro Segade. Drawn from their video project The Night Epi$ode, My Barbarian portray "nightmare" curators (literally, curators of nightmares), satirizing the processes of inclusion and marginalization that artists face, in a theatrical, horror-show debate. The collective reflects on the hysterical public discourse and private insecurities amplified by the recession through hair-raising, brain-teasing song and dance routines.
