We recently saw a man hunt, cook, and eat a New York City pigeon. Now, let's look at the rat-hunting dogs of New York.
On Friday nights in lower Manhattan, a group of dog owners take their terriers to a trash-filled alley, and let them loose.
"It's exercise for the dog, and it's proof we have the working gene as a part of our breeding program for these dogs," Richard Reynolds, a rat-hunting regular, told NBC. "They'll do what they were bred to do a long time ago."
And if you're concerned about the dogs accidentally ingesting rat poison, like so many of the city's hawks, Reynolds has some reassuring words. "The dogs don't eat the rats, they simply dispatch them."
