Scott Brown Remains Vague On 2014 Run For Governor, Says 'We'll Soon Find Out'

Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) did not rule out a 2014 run for governor but praised the man who could be his primary opponent, Charlie Baker, speaking to the Boston Herald Wednesday.

Brown mentioned the possibility of facing off against former GOP gubernatorial nominee Charlie Baker, who said that he would decide on a run by Labor Day. "We’re both big guys," he said. "There’s nothing wrong with a primary. And there’s nothing wrong with having a free shot either. We're going to talk." The former senator added that Baker would make a "great governor."

Brown said, "whether it’s for governor or something else, we’ll soon find out."

Despite leaving the door open, Brown privately told Baker that he would not run for governor in 2014, according to the Boston Globe.

Brown became a Fox News contributor and counsel for mega-firm Nixon Peabody, both moves that seemed to indicate a career away from future office.

He also has similarly not ruled out a run for the United States Senate in more Republican friendly New Hampshire, but it is extremely rare to run for Senate in different states.

A June poll found that Brown would tie former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II (D-Mass.) -- who has no plans to run to governor -- in a hypothetical matchup, and have huge leads over two other Democrats, state Treasurer Steve Grossman (55 percent to 26 percent) and Rep. Mike Capuano (45 percent to 33 percent). Grossman has announced while Capuano is weighing a run for governor. Baker trailed in head-to-head matchups against the Democrats, an indication that he is less well-known than Brown.

On the Democratic side, Attorney General Martha Coakley is also mulling a bid, raising the specter of a 2014 rematch of the 2010 U.S. Senate special election. Grossman, former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Don Berwick, state Sen. Dan Wolf (D) and health care executive Joe Avellone have all announced bids.
