Sparkfun Free Day took place today, and generated plenty of Sparkfun Twitter buzz, vaulting the electronics retailer to 'Trending Topic' status on the hashtag #sparkfun.

Sparkfun Free Day was a promotion to give out $100,000 in free merchandise. It led to server issues at the Sparkfun Web site today, and frustrated comments began popping up on Twitter as a result:

rogermeier: #sparkfun #freeday epic fail! Couldn't log on for 2 hours. And now the whole thing is over.

benshell: So much for the #sparkfun giveaway this morning. I was ready to go before it started, but I wasn't able to checkout. :(

kjabs: damnit ... i missed getting stuff from @sparkfun because the site wouldn't load. #sparkfun #fail @exiva

The event ended just moments ago with the official Sparkfun Twitter account stating, "Free Day is officially over folks. At 10:44:47, we reached $100,587.80 (6 people hit the checkout button at the same time to end the day)."

The Sparkfun Web site had been promoting the event for days with this promo:

It seems like it was just last week when we announced SparkFun Free Day and now it is almost upon us! Free Day is coming in just a few short days - Thursday, January 7th, 2010, to be exact.
