A video uploaded to YouTube purports to show a merciless attack on two ambulance drivers in Syria.

In the raw footage, two men in the front seat of an ambulance are filmed while bullets rip through the windows. One man is then carried away from the ambulance by frantic bystanders.

In a speech on Thursday, President Obama condemned Syrian President Bashar Assad for the ruthless crackdown, saying the leader should pursue a democratic transition or "get out of the way." On Wednesday, the White House announced that the U.S. would impose sanctions on Assad.

The attack on medical workers is not unprecedented. In Bahrain, doctors have been targeted legally for helping injured protesters, and in Libya, hospitals were targeted by the Gaddafi regime, Reuters reports. Attacking medical and aid workers is a violation of the Geneva Conventions.
