Walmart is back on the hunt for its first New York City location.
According to Crain's New York, the retail giant is considering leasing the 630,000-square-foot Gateway II shopping center in Brooklyn.
Reports say the company is looking elsewhere around the city as well.
Walmart's earlier attempts to move into the metropolitan area were rebuffed by labor and community groups. After the company failed to secure stores in Queens and on Staten Island, then-Walmart CEO Lee Scott declared that opening a location in the city wasn't "worth the effort."
Now that the company is dipping its toe in the water again, union and political leaders are already gearing up for a fight.
"We don't like how they treat workers as it relates to salaries and benefits, and we're not going to have them in our community," City Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn) told Crain's. "They will have the fight of their lives."
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 are planning a protest for next week.
