For widow Bernardine Joel, the news that her energetic young daughter had an inoperable brain tumor was a crushing blow. Doctors told her that her daughter Daniela had only six months to live. Now, over a year later, Daniela is still alive, thanks in part to her mother's dedicated care.
After receiving the crushing news, Joel left her job to care for Daniela. Since her husband had passed away a few years earlier, Joel's decision to care for her child full-time left her without an income to pay her bills. Luckily, she discovered the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial support to single parents and working families, allowing them to care for their critically ill children. The organization was founded by Valerie Sobel, in honor of her teenage son who died of a brain tumor in 1995.
