Charlie Melancon Hits David Vitter Again Over Brent Furer Furor (VIDEO)

Rep. Charlie Melancon's (D-La.) campaign closed out the month of June taking a hard shot at his opponent in the Louisiana Senate race, incumbent Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), over his retention of aide Brent Furer long after Vitter became aware that Furer had violently attacked a girlfriend with a knife.

The Melancon campaign returns this week with another ad, on the same topic, possessed of the same David Fincheresque vibe -- but well armed with an additional revelations: that Vitter lied when he told reporters that Furer did not work on women's issues.

Per Brian Beutler, at TPM:

Brent Furer pled guilty in 2008 to attacking his girlfriend with a knife, but was nonetheless retained in Vitter's DC legislative office in the role of legislative assistant for women's issues until the details of Furer's crime were publicized in late June. He subsequently resigned. In Louisiana today, Vitter categorically denied that Furer worked on women's issues in any way. But numerous records and published accounts prove otherwise.

Several DC-based information services publish detailed listings of staff assignments and contact information for Capitol Hill offices. And multiple directories, both online and in hard copy, name Furer as Vitter's legislative assistant on women's issues.

And, lo, this was true! And since then, Furer's status as an aide who was responsible for "women's issues," has been confirmed by a second source. Back to Beutler:

"We know first-hand that Brent Furer, a perpetrator of domestic violence, worked on women's issues in Senator Vitter's office," reads a statement from Sue Else, president of the National Network to End Domestic Violence. "Even if Furer didn't work on women's issues, he should have been fired for violently attacking an intimate partner. Senator Vitter should have fired Furer when he first learned about the case.

"David Vitter is lying," says the ad. And they are 100% correct!
