Move over, DUI, there's a new menace in town: the DUI. Despite sharing the same acronym, 'drugged driving,' is the focus of a Colorado Department of Transportation campaign.

CDOT, the Colorado State Patrol, and other law enforcement agencies will be focused on drugged driving enforcement through Sept. 6. In a press release, officials announced their intent to target people driving under the influence of "prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, medical marijuana and illicit drugs."

Public outreach and enforcement will include billboards, posters, and gas-pump ads. The program comes on the heels of an early-August "Drug Enforcement Checkpoint" involving drug dogs and undoubtedly awkward encounters with medical marijuana card holders.

According to CDOT, In 2010, 58% of drivers in fatal crashes who tested positive for drugs had ingested marijuana (32 people).

On Friday, August 19, a 'drugged driving' billboard in Jefferson County was stolen. 9News reports the sign was 8 feet by 20 feet and scheduled to appear at a news conference.
