Every three years, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria calls on donors for support. At this year's conference, executive director Michel Kazatchkine revealed that they were coming up short. Although the last drive yielded $9.7 billion, the foundation admitted that they were far below the $13 billion needed to reach their Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
Kazatchkine told Reuters in a telephone interview:
"The outcome of this conference is absolutely key for millions of people around the world and this will not take us to where we were hoping to be."
In spite of the discouraging news, The Global Fund has succeeded in raising over $19.3 billion across 144 countries since its creation in 2002. Kazatchkine, who attributed the slump to the global recession, urged governments not to lose hope and maintained that there would be more opportunities save the fund's falling profile.
