Instagram had a big year. After all, eight short months ago the little photo-sharing app was purchased by Facebook for hefty $1 billion.

But what did 2012 look like through Instagram's filtered lenses? In a blog post looking back at the year that's passed, Instagram took note of the big events in 2012 -- from the horror of Hurricane Sandy to the pageantry of the London Olympics -- that had people taking out their phones and snapping striking photography to share with the world.
