Report Of Possible Man With Gun Near White House Relayed To GWU Campus

WASHINGTON -- According to a text alert sent out to George Washington University students, staff and faculty Monday evening, the Secret Service reported a "white male with a gun, balding, eye glasses, gray fleece headed towards campus from the White House."

The area around the university's Foggy Bottom campus, located a few blocks west of the White House, was searched by law enforcement and no suspects were found, according to a dispatch from the university, which urged people to call 911 or campus police at (202) 994-6111 if they spotted anything suspicious.

The campus did not go into a lockdown, according to WTOP:

According to a campus alert, law enforcement officers from the Secret Service, Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Park Police searched Gelman Library on H Street NW after a student inside reported seeing a person matching the suspect's description changing clothes. Around 10:50 p.m., police prevented students from entering the library, according to WRC-TV/NBC4.

A follow-up GWU text alert sent around 11:30 p.m. said that police "searched the library and no suspects were located." The library was reopened, according to The Hatchet.

WJLA-TV/ABC7 reports that the university "received a tip from Secret Service of a suspicious man walking away from the area of the White House," which prompted the initial campus alert.

According to the Associated Press, the Secret Service "declined to elaborate" on the situation.
