A teen who was in critical condition over the weekend after a shark attacked him in North Carolina's Outer Banks has been upgraded to serious condition.

The victim, 18, is in recovery, according to a spokeswoman for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, in Norfolk, Virginia, where the teen was airlifted Saturday. He sustained injuries to his right calf, buttocks and both hands. No one else was hurt, although others swam around him in the waters off the town of Waves.

On Friday morning, also in the Outer Banks, a 47-year-old man endured nonlife-threatening wounds to his back and legs while trying to help others avoid a shark.

The attack off the shores of Waves was the sixth in the state this year. A shark also bit a 43-year-old man swimming near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Friday, according to CBS News.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore Facebook page included details of the latest attack.
