Obama In Afghanistan Tells Karzai He Must Deliver On Benchmarks, Battle Corruption

On his surprise visit to Afghanistan on Sunday, President Barack Obama carried with him criticism for Afghan President Hamid Karzai. National Security Adviser James Jones told reporters traveling with Obama that the president would "engage" with Karzai on benchmarks "to make him understand that in his second term, there are certain things that have been not paid attention to, almost since day one."

The list of items that Karzai hasn't delivered on is a long one and, according to Jones, includes "a merit-based system for appointment of key government officials, battling corruption, taking the fight to the narco-traffickers, which provides a lot of the economic engine for the insurgents."
