According to the newly released Project on Student Debt, the average student debt load in America is $24,000 -- but in some states, the average reaches $30,000. See below which states, including the District of Columbia, have the highest student debt average.

The Project on Student Debt calculated state debt averages for the class of 2009 using voluntarily reported college-level data from about 1,000 public and private nonprofit four-year colleges. See more about the Project here.
