Pride Houston 2012: What an Experience!

I had one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life as Grand Marshal of Pride Houston. What a rush! Everyone was so kind, loving, and happy. I was dancing up and down in the car, throwing beads and screaming, "I love Houston!"

Pride is amazing. It is a revolution in today's society, and a colorful one at that. Pride Houston was no exception! People from all walks of life were dressed in all sorts of colors, outfits, and interesting things.

I think it is important for everyone to know that the LGBT community is woven into the fabric of every city and state in this country and the world. We are your friends, family members, coworkers, and servicemen and women. Pride celebrations give those who have been oppressed an opportunity to shine. They give those who are scared to come out a chance to observe from afar and see that it is safe and OK. They give those who oppose our community an occasion to rethink their perspectives. The larger and louder we get, the more people will listen.

I had one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life as Grand Marshal of Pride Houston. What a rush! Everyone was so kind, loving, and happy. I was dancing up and down in the car, throwing beads and screaming, "I love Houston!" The cheers and the smiles still make my hairs on the back of my neck stand up. By the end of the parade, I was so exhausted. I lay on the back of the car, totally depleted. Would I do it again? Absolutely! I am proud to be out and grateful to share my story.
