5 Timeless Movies Every Generation Can Enjoy
|

As you begin recovering from your turkey coma and shopping hangover, your holiday spirit may be headed south.

But with your family all together for Thanksgiving weekend, there's no better time to get back in your holiday groove. We asked our Facebook fans what movies they just love watching with their families. So prop your feet up, grab some leftovers, and pop in one of these feel-good classics everyone can enjoy.

1) "A Christmas Story. Love that movie and our family quotes from it throughout the year," said Laureen Lund.

Known for the infamous "leg lamp," this 1980s flick about an Indiana boy's desperate attempts to get a BB gun for Christmas is sure to make everyone laugh.

2) "Wizard of Oz," said Jaye DeVeney Gilleland.

You've most likely seen this film, but maybe the kids or grandkids haven't. It's quite possibly one of the most well-known and most quoted films of all time, telling the story of a small-town girl swept away to an unfamiliar land and the strange friends she meets along the way.

The New York Times' Frank Nugent calls it "A delightful piece of wonder-working which had the youngsters' eyes shining and brought a quietly amused gleam to the wiser ones of the oldsters."

3) "Miracle on 34th St," said Rachel Cracken Herbig.

The quintessential Christmas classic, "Miracle on 34th Street" is a feel-good film about a toy-department Santa at Macy's and the antics that ensue around the holidays. Critics say it will make even the non-believer believe in Santa, so this may be perfect for the kids.

4) "The original How the Grinch Stole Christmas," said Judith C. Warren.

The original animated film was originally aired on TV as a short but was remade in 2000 with Jim Carrey starring as the Grinch. Both are based on Dr. Seuss' original book about a Christmas curmudgeon who grows tired of the holiday spirit and sets out to ruin Christmas by pretending to be Santa.

5) "Secondhand Lions," said Marie Reynolds.

The intergenerational comedy stars Haley Joel Osment as a pre-teen who is left to spend the summer with his granduncles, played by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall. "Adults will appreciate the light, tongue-in-cheek tone and children will enjoy the action sequences and the coming-of-age perspective,"said film critic James Bernardinelli.

Improve Your Credit Score
Get A Copy Of Your Credit Report(01 of08)

Your personal credit report is an easy-to-read record of your credit accounts and total indebtedness. It is a good idea to review your credit report at least once a year and when you're getting ready to make a major purchase. You can request a copy of your report directly from Experian. You also should consider reviewing your reports from the other national credit reporting companies. (credit:Alamy)
Know Your Credit Score(02 of08)
Open Image Modal
A credit score translates the information in your credit report into a number reflecting the risk of doing business with you. While there are many different types of credit scoring models, a higher score generally represents lower risk. To check your risk, request a credit score when you order your credit report. You will receive an explanation of what the score means and what from your credit report is most affecting it. (credit:Alamy)
Have Some Credit, But Not Too Much(03 of08)

A credit history shows creditors how you manage your debts. Having no credit history can make it difficult to qualify for new credit because creditors have no information to help them make a lending decision. You only need a few active accounts reported to the credit reporting companies to demonstrate smart credit management. (credit:Alamy)
Pay Your Bills On Time (04 of08)

Late payments, called delinquencies, negatively impact your credit scores and affect your ability to get credit, since they indicate a stronger likelihood that you will make late payments again or will be unable to pay your debts in the future. If you fall behind on your payments, contact your lenders, which may work with you to set up a different payment schedule or interest rate. (credit:Alamy)
Have A Mixture Of Credit Types(05 of08)

A mix of accounts can show that you know how to manage all types of credit. It is good to have a history of repaying an installment loan, such as a car or student loan, but a revolving account, such as a credit card, demonstrates more clearly that you can responsibly manage credit because you have to control how much you charge and pay each month. Keep Credit Card Balances Low(06 of08)

High outstanding debt can affect your credit scores because it results in a high utilization rate, or balance-to-limit ratio, making you appear to be an increased credit risk. Keeping your balances low compared with credit limits shows that you aren't tempted to charge more than you can pay and can handle larger amounts of available credit. (credit:Alamy)
Use Caution When Closing Accounts(07 of08)

Closing an account isn't always a good thing because it can result in an increase to your utilization rate. However, if you want to eliminate a few cards with high interest rates or fees - and you have ample credit available to you - the impact on your credit score should be relatively minor. Apply For And Open New Credit Accounts Only As Needed(08 of08)

Apply for and open new credit accounts only as needed. Recent inquiries indicate you may have taken on new debt that isn't yet shown on your credit report, and many inquiries in a short time might suggest you are trying to live on borrowed money. (credit:Alamy)
