Parents Protest Plans For Gun Range Next To School

Connecticut parents are speaking out against plans to build a shooting range near an elementary school, WTNH News 8 reports.

On Monday evening, parents staged a protest outside Sprague Elementary in Waterbury, Conn., timed to start just before the mayor and members of the board of education toured the proposed site for the range, according to NBC Connecticut.

At the rally, parents raised a number of objections to the gun range, including safety concerns and the possibility of lead poisoning.

"What are guns made of? Lead is not OK. Not an ounce of lead is OK for our kids, period," Lisa Lessard, a community activist told NBC Connecticut.

Last year, the city's zoning commission unanimously approved a plan for an indoor range in the basement of a former factory.

In response, the board of education sued the city last summer, according to an earlier report from WTNH News 8.
