CBS Crew Tracking R. Kelly Says Car Keys Were Stolen

The TV crew said someone snatched the keys while they confronted a man in Chicago they thought was the embattled singer.

An Atlanta-based CBS crew said its car keys were stolen while team members followed embattled R&B musician R. Kelly late Sunday.

Chief investigative reporter Jonathan Carlson said on Twitter just after 3 a.m. Monday that someone jumped from an SUV and snatched the keys from the TV team’s vehicle as crew members confronted an individual they thought was Kelly leaving a Chicago recording studio.

Carlson said the key thief knew it was a media vehicle and “a comprehensive report” would be aired Monday.

Police responded to a theft report in the area around 11:50 p.m., according to the Chicago Tribune.

Kelly, besieged by sexual misconduct allegations stretching back decades, was the focus of a Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” last month.

His Chicago recording space has come under scrutiny amid questions over whether it’s being used illegally during overnight hours as a living space.
