A shooting in suburban Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon left one man dead and two women wounded as officers exchanged fire with an armed individual, authorities said. The alleged gunman also died, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, though it’s unclear if he took his own life or was killed by police gunfire.

Police in Azusa, California “came under fire” as they responded to reports of gunfire around 2 p.m. local time, according to Chief of Police Steve Hunt.

Multiple officers fired at the alleged shooter, Hunt said. No officers were injured.

The women are in critical condition, while the man was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities did not release names of the victims or the shooter or speculate on a motive.

Azusa Police Chief Steve Hunt said earlier that police believed the shooting suspect was a woman.

A nearby middle school was on lockdownaccording to KABC, while two polling stations were “impacted,” according to the LA County Registrar. The Registrar urged voters to find alternate locations to cast ballots.
