Kuma's Stands By Communion-Wafer Burger, Donates To Catholic Group

Story by Quinn Ford, courtesy DNAinfo Chicago:

AVONDALE — After a flurry of pun-filled headlines and outrage from burger-loving Catholics across the country, Kuma's Corner issued a statement about its controversial "Ghost" burger, which features an unconsecrated communion wafer, Friday afternoon.

And the restaurant is making no apologies.

In a statement on the restaurant's Facebook page, owner Michael Cain and director of operations Luke Tobias said they did not create the burger "as a commentary on religion or as an attack on anyone's personal beliefs."

"In the past we have done a number of burgers dealing with this same exact topic to very little fanfare," the statement read. "Never in the spirit of offending anyone, and always in mindset of praising a band for the work that they do."

"Saturday Night Live" star Cecily Strong:
This question is sad because it means either I'm about to die or Chicago is about to disappear. But I guess I would go to Gaudi Cafe on Ashland and Erie. It's my absolute favorite restaurant. The owners are sisters named Betty and Veronica. It's BYOB which I always love, and the food is insanely good. Everyone go there! I never want that restaurant to close.

Definitely Giordano's. I grew up on Giordano's and I just love it. I'd have the sausage and onion on thin crust.

Moto chef Homaro Cantu:
Burt's Pizza. You gotta check it out. He's the guy that invented Chicago pizza. He's 82 years old? He's going to die any day now, but he invented it back in the '60s, and his name is Burt Katz. He makes the best fucking pizza ever. He makes his own fresh dough, he goes to the market every morning and he makes his own tomato sauce and you can taste it. The dude is a legend. If it wasn't for him, we'd be eating New York [style] pizza. ... You should go to Burt's, it is the best pizza ever. It's so good. And it's one of the reasons I picked Chicago: because I'm a pizza junkie. Wherever I fly, I go to the best pizza places in the city, and Burt's is the best.

Every time I go to this particular place, I act like it's my last meal. La Scarola. I would have the escarole and beans and some grilled calamari and the Sinatra -- their penne dish with vodka sauce and mussels and a bunch of stuff. It's so good. And a glass of super Tuscan.

It would be the Diner Grill on Irving Park Road. Not to take away from any of the wonderful spots in Chicago, but it was my first meal in Chicago. I would have a ham and cheese omelette, wheat toast well done, a glass of orange juice, and then I'd close my eyes, walk on to Irving Park Road and get hit by a bus.
