Jonathan Pinson Indicted For Kickbacks(01 of05)

Jonathan Pinson, former Chairman of the South Carolina State Board of Trustees, was yesterday indicted on two federal kickback charges. Pinson, who resigned as chair last year and from the board earlier this month, is alleged to have conspired with former SCSU police chief Michael Bartley to receive gifts in exchange for using their position to encourage the school into a land purchase deal. HBCUs Pledge To Train More Black Health Care Pros(02 of05)

Several historically black colleges in Alabama this week pledged participation in a new effort to train more black health care professionals in the state. The initiative, led by Morehouse School of Medicine President Emeritus Dr. Louis Sullivan, will unite black colleges and predominantly white colleges in Alabama to raise the current percentage of minority doctors, nurses and advocates from 5.5 percent. The Famuan Delays First Issue Of 2013(03 of05)

Florida A&M University’s award-winning student newspaper, the Famuan, has delayed its first spring publishing date until January 30, with school leaders citing the need for more training and development in light of a potential libel lawsuit. Keon Hollis, a former drum major in the Marching 100, was incorrectly implicated in a 2011 Famuan story as a responsible party in the hazing death of fellow drum major Robert Champion. Michael Strahan, Aeneas Williams Named Finalists For Pro Football Hall Of Fame(04 of05)

Black college football legends Michael Strahan and Aeneas Williams have been selected as finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Strahan, a Super Bowl champion and former defensive end for Texas Southern University, and Williams, former all-pro defensive back and Southern University alum, will find out on Feb. 2 if they’ve made the hall. Albany State Returns Ray Charles Endowment(05 of05)

Albany State University this week refunded part of a $3 million dollar gift given by iconic entertainer Ray Charles to the school. The Ray Charles Foundation insists that ASU did not use the gift as intended by Charles, to help fund construction of a fine arts center on the campus. The university says that part of the money was used to finance student scholarships, and that Charles never explicitly instructed the university on how to use the funds. (credit:Alamy)
