Tras dos semanas de mantener la incógnita de quién sería el próximo rival del campeón mexicano Saúl Álvarez, por fin Golden Boy Promotions reveló que será Jose Manuel 'Josesito' López será el que suba al ring a enfrentar al tapatío.

Canelo está programado para subir el próximo 15 de septiembre al ring del MGM Grand de Las Vegas, Nevada, para defender por quinta ocasión la corona de los Superwelters del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo.

Para retar al campeón mexicano Josesito, quien recién subió a la categoría de los Welters (147 libras), tendrá que subir casi cuatro kilos para poder aspirar a la corona que mantiene el mexicano desde que venciera a Matthew Hatton.

Josesito López es el cuarto intento de la promotora de Óscar de la Hoya por mantener la fecha del 15 de septiembre, luego de que tuvieran que los tres rivales previamente asignados del Canelo sufrieran lesiones.

El primero fue Paul Williams, quien sufrió un accidente en motocicleta que lo dejó paralítico. Después siguió James Kirkland que canceló el duelo pues se volvió a resentir del hombro derecho del que recientemente fue operado.

Por último, Victor Ortiz tuvo que cancelar el duelo pues en un encuentro con Josesito López sufrió una doble fractura de mandíbula.
