A 54-year-old pilot was seriously injured when his single-engine airplane crashed inside Yellowstone National Park, officials say.
The unidentified man was removed from the a heap of twisted metal near the community of Gardiner, Montana, shortly after the 8:30 a.m. crash, according to a National Park Service press release. He was airlifted to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for treatment.
The accident site was south of Gardiner Airport, north of Gardiner Cemetery and east of Yellowstone Trail.
It wasn't immediately clear what brought down the Aero Commander, a plane designed to carry a pilot and no passengers.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are on the scene investigating.
