The financial jargon and parade of rules and exceptions associated with Social Security can prevent Americans from fully utilizing their benefits. To clear up the confusion, the AARP last month released a "For Dummies" book on the topic, intended to present "the nuts and bolts of this far-reaching program in language that's easy to understand," according to the AARP.

In this video, author Jonathan Peterson, executive communications director at AARP and a former national and financial correspondent for The Los Angeles Times, explains how he hopes the book will give readers "greater peace of mind." He also discusses some of the important issues the book addresses, such as the best time to begin collecting.
