Mixed among the 7.2 million tweets about the presidential debate on Tuesday night (via @gov) were at least a few hundred from professional athletes, many of whom seemed at least as interested in what Obama and Romney were doing at Hofstra as in what Verlander was doing in Detroit.
While the result in Detroit was definitive, opinions differed on the winner and highlights of the second debate. Not surprisingly, this hyper-competitive group picked up on how fiercely the president and his Republican challenger wanted to land the rhetorical knockout. As you might have guessed, sports metaphors --particularly boxing and wrestling -- abounded.
If there was one main difference between the conversations the debate sparked among the athletes that Huffpost Sports follows it was that "binders full of women" was not the go-to meme of the night. With Chad Johnson leading the way, the aspect of the action that seemed funniest to our sports stars was the guy who apparently fell asleep in the front row.
From comments on Romney's swag, Obama's finishing 47% flourish and Candy Crowley's potential biases as moderator, here are more than 50 of the funniest, most insightful and/or passionate tweets from athletes during the second debate.
