After barreling down a Michigan highway at speeds so fast her 7-year-old daughter and another child were ready to jump out a backseat window, a 46-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to DUI.
Betty Jean Turner's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit, police said. She will be sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court on Nov. 9 by Judge Wendy Potts. Turner faces up to 5 years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Turner was arrested just before 6 p.m. on September 18, after Troy Police received several 911 calls from other motorists who reported seeing Turner drive her Ford Contour erratically on southbound I-75. The witnesses told police that Turner was driving in excess of 90 mph.
"Oh my gosh, she must doing 100 now," an unidentified 911 caller told police.
"This red Contour went flying by me, swerving all over the road. She almost wiped out trying to over correct and she has kids in the car," another 911 caller said.
When police initially attempted to stop Turner, she did not comply. When she did finally stop, officers discovered two children -- Turner's 7-year-old daughter and the 9-year-old daughter of a family friend -- in the back seat, police said.
"We're scared," one of the children is heard saying to police as they approached the vehicle in the video taken from a dashboard camera.
The children, who were not injured, told police they were afraid for their lives
"The children told officers the driver was speeding and that they were going to jump out of the car because they didn't want to die," Troy police Lt. Robert Redmond said.
When police checked Turner's record, they discovered she has not held a valid driver's license since 1999. They also discovered she has two previous DUI convictions.
Turner was charged with drunken driving after she failed a breathalyzer test, police said. Her blood alcohol content was .23 -- nearly triple the legal limit in Michigan.
Andrew Moxie, the attorney representing Turner, told The Huffington Post he is waiting for a pre-sentencing report to be completed by the Oakland County Probation Department.
"I'm hoping that the recommendation will include some treatment for my client to address the illness she has," Moxie said.
