Office of Management and Budget Director Sylvia Mathews Burwell notified furloughed federal workers late Wednesday that they should plan to return to work on Thursday as the partial government shutdown came to a close.
"Now that the bill has passed the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, the President plans to sign it tonight and employees should expect to return to work in the morning," Burwell said in a statement released by the White House. "Employees should be checking the news and OPM's website for further updates."
Burwell's statement came after both the House and Senate voted to reopen the federal government and lift the debt ceiling. An official memo went out Thursday morning on the websites of the Office of Personnel Management and the OMB.
The measure, unveiled Wednesday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), will fund the government through January 15 and raise the debt limit through February 7.
The bill also provides backpay for furloughed workers.
