La gloria de Michael Phelps de ser el atleta con más medallas olímpicas en la historia puede desvanecerse por un conflicto reglamentario y fotos publicitarias.

Unas fotos promocionales de la marca Louis Vuitton salieron a la luz en el periodo de veda obligatorio para todos los deportistas que participan en los Juegos Olímpicos. Según el reglamento 40 del Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), del 18 de julio al 15 de agosto los atletas no podían anunciar firmas que no sean oficiales.

Entre los posibles castigos que enfrenta según el reglamento está la pérdida de medallas:
"Un competidor o un equipo puede perder el beneficio de la clasificación obtenida en relación a otros eventos en los Juegos Olímpicos donde él o el equipo fue descalificado o excluido, en tal caso, las medallas y diplomas ganadas por él o un equipo serán devueltos al COI".

Las mencionadas imágenes fueron filtradas a la red, por lo que el agente del multimedallista, Peter Carlisle, negó dolo o desacato en este asunto: "No puedo contar con las manos en esta oficina el número de usos no autorizados que ocurren durante el período de los Juegos. Éste es uno de los más grandes ejemplos de cómo Michael ha trascendido la natación y podría decirse incluso los deportes".

"Él no violó la Regla 40, es tan simple como eso", sentenció Carlisle.

Michael Phelps logró 22 medallas de por vida en los Juegos Olímpicos, 18 de oro, dos de plata y dos de bronce. Sus conquistas en Londres 2012 son las que están en peligro.
