Water Main Break Leaves Scranton Neighborhood Practically Encased In Ice

Residents had to leave their homes as icy water flooded basements and shut down heating systems.

It was like a scene out of Disney's "Frozen." On Thursday, an entire neighborhood in Scranton, Pennsylvania was left covered in ice.

But it wasn't the work of Princess Elsa. A water main break combined with subzero temperatures created a surreal frozen landscape that almost looked sculpted in places:

"I looked out the front window and it looked as if there was like a frozen wave of water, and it was literally frozen solid," resident Nicole Tassie told WNEP, the local ABC station.

While the scenes may have looked beautiful, the situation itself was dangerous.

"I'm just concerned that people will slide and get hurt, or get hit with those big icicles there hanging," homeowner Oscar Velez told CBS News.

WNEP reported that more than two dozen people had to leave their homes as water flooded basements and shut down heating systems.

The Red Cross also set up a shelter nearby for affected families.

It's not clear what caused the break, but by Friday afternoon at least some residents were able to return to their homes, according to the Scranton Times.
